How Posa works

Sitting fights your body. Squatting helps it. Posa is the missing 17 centimetres.

For two million years, humans squatted to relieve themselves. Then in the 1840s, London built sewers and we started sitting on porcelain. Your anatomy never updated. Posa restores the original posture — without changing your toilet.

  1. When you sit
    85° anorectal angle

    Your body is fighting you.

On a modern toilet, a small muscle called the puborectalis wraps your rectum and pulls it forward — like a sling tightening a hose. To go, you have to push against your own anatomy. That's why it takes longer. That's why it strains.

  2. When you squat
    105° anorectal angle

    Your body opens.

Lift your knees above your hips and the sling relaxes. The path through the colon straightens out. You don't need to push — gravity does the work. This is how humans have done it for two million years; the toilet is the recent invention, not the squat.

  3. How Posa helps
    17 cm of foot elevation

    We add the missing centimetres.

A 17 cm sealed bamboo footrest. Wraps any standard toilet — EU, US, UK and Canadian pans alike. Tucks under the rim when you're done. The posture pelvic-floor physiotherapists already recommend — Posa just makes it your default.

Who it's for

Honest framing of what posture actually changes.

Posa is a wellness product, not a CE-marked medical device. Below: what the research says about each condition, graded honestly.

Condition Adult prevalence Evidence What changes
Chronic constipationRome IV criteria ~17%pooled global mean Moderate Less straining, faster evacuationSikirov · Edgar · Modi

Mechanism well-characterised; secondary outcomes consistent. Posture-modification trials in healthy adults reliably show shorter duration and reduced straining. No RCT in diagnosed chronic-constipation patients yet — the evidence gap.

Peppas et al. BMC Gastroenterol 2008 · Gonçalves UEG · Modi J Clin Gastroenterol 2019.

Haemorrhoidal symptomsswollen anal cushions ~26%point prevalence · 45 countries Moderate · prevention Reduced toilet time + strainingindirect evidence

Mechanism is mechanical: prolonged sitting + straining are the named risk factors. Posa does not treat existing haemorrhoids. It reduces two of the inputs.

Ann Med meta-analysis 2025 (n = 8.96 M across 45 countries); Giuliani et al.

Pelvic-floor dysfunctionincontinence, prolapse, post-partum ~50%women, 5–10 yrs after first birth Weak-to-moderate The posture physios already recommendNHS guidance

Pelvic-health physiotherapists routinely recommend raising the knees above the hips during defecation. Trial evidence on devices is mixed — Lam (n = 52) found no significant difference in pelvic-floor descent. We describe the posture, not a cure.

Diverticulosiscolonic-wall outpouchings ~30%at age 60, >50% at age 80 Moderate · prevention OR 3.36 risk on sit-toiletvs squat-toilet

Sit-toilet use is an independent risk factor for diverticulosis (OR 3.36, 95% CI 1.684–6.705, P = .001) after adjusting for age. The proposed mechanism: lower intraluminal pressure when squatting. Prevention, not reversal.

Built to last

One bamboo stool. A decade of plastic ones.

Most squatty stools are moulded plastic that cracks, yellows and needs replacing every couple of years. Posa is solid moso bamboo, sealed for bathrooms. One purchase. Made to stay in the room it was bought for.

A plastic toilet stool on the left, a Posa bamboo stool on the right
Plastic vs. Posa. The blue one is what most people buy first. The bamboo one is what they buy to replace it.
  • 150 kg Tested load capacity. Kids, adults, elderly.
  • 6–9 % Moisture content, sealed. Shrugs off splashes; wipes clean.
  • 38×23×17 cm The exact footprint of a folded hand towel. Tucks under the rim.
  • 5 yr Warranty. Wobble, crack or finish failure — we replace it.

Care: damp cloth, any pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid bleach and abrasive sponges — they'll damage the sealant, not the bamboo.

Common questions

Everything you'd ask, before you ask it.

€70 for a wooden stool — really?
Moso bamboo, sealed for bathroom use, with a 5-year warranty. It's one purchase to replace a decade of €25 plastic stools. We picked a material that outlasts the decision.
Is there actual evidence, or is this a TikTok thing?
Four peer-reviewed trials — Sakakibara 2010, Sikirov 2003, Edgar 2019 (via Rahgoshay), Modi 2019 — all point the same direction: footstool users strain less and finish sooner. Citations sit on this page. Posa itself hasn't been in a trial — the physiology has been studied enough that we don't need to.
Will it fit my toilet?
The U-shape wraps any standard toilet pan — EU, US, UK, Canadian and Australian toilets are all within the 38–42 cm bowl range Posa is cut for. Two wide bamboo side panels give it a stable base on any floor type, so wall-hung and pedestal toilets work too. Footprint: 38 × 23 cm.
I'm tall. Is 17 cm enough?
17 cm sits in the middle of the evidence band (15–22 cm). If you're taller than 1.90 m you might prefer 22–23 cm — we currently only make one height.
Isn't plastic cheaper?
Yes. And it lasts a few years. One bamboo stool outlasts a decade of plastic ones; one purchase, once. Plus the grain looks like something you'd choose to own.
Will it look weird in a modern bathroom?
Two finishes (Light Wood / Dark Wood), soft-radius edges, no ridged plastic surfaces. It tucks under the rim when not in use. Footprint: a folded hand towel.
How long will I need to use it?
Daily, for life. The posture is the point; the stool is the tool. Most users feel the difference on day one; habit settles in at about two weeks.
Is it hygienic?
Sealed moso bamboo wipes clean with a damp cloth. Bamboo's moisture content is lower than most hardwoods, so it shrugs off splashes. Avoid bleach and abrasive sponges — they damage the finish.
What does the 5-year warranty cover?
Five years from delivery. Covers manufacturing defects, structural failure (wobble, split, crack), and finish failure (sealant peeling, discolouration). We replace or refund at our cost. Not covered: accidental damage, misuse, damage from bleach or abrasive cleaners. Email us with your order number and a photo — see Terms §7.
What's the return policy?
30 days, no questions asked. Item in original packaging, in resellable condition. Refund to the original payment method once we receive it. See Returns for details.
